This weekend (Friday 15 to Sunday 17 September) sees a new project launching in Weston-super-Mare – Promenade.
The programme of multidisciplinary contemporary art explores the town’s unique coastal landscape and our relationship with the environment we live in.
Activities include location-specific commissioned artworks, workshops, music and performance, and walks and talks taking place along Weston’s promenade.
The Promenade Weekender hub will be located at Madeira Cove, above Marine Lake, with activities taking place at various locations along the promenade (mainly from Marine Lake to Birnbeck Pier).
All events are free to attend and pre-booking is not required. Pick up a programme from the hub or following Instagram for updates.
Last chance to enjoy Heritage Open Days
Take the opportunity to discover Weston’s past before the popular Heritage Open Days festival ends on Sunday (17 September).
This annual national festival of heritage offers free entry to sites across the town, with creative performances, walks, talks and more.
This weekend there is still chance to:
- visit Birnbeck Pier Visitor Hub to experience creative performances. Tomorrow (Saturday), local artist Jordan Cottle will read extracts from his new show ‘The Old Pier’ at 11am, 1.30pm and 4pm. Using live music, vocal soundscapes and poetic storytelling, Jordan weaves a tale of adventure that explores the forgotten memories of Birnbeck Pier and the magic that can be found right on your doorstep. There will not be any access to the pier or island. Timings of performances may change slightly depending on the weather.
- step into the past at Woodspring Priory in Kewstoke. The priory was founded in or around 1210 and belonged to the Victorine order of Augustinian Canons, a French foundation of which the Abbey of St Augustine in Bristol was the leading representative in this country. Open tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm. Booking isn’t required but the Landmark Trust does recommend pre-booking.
- visit local churches. Grade II* listed All Saints Church, in All Saints Road, is open tomorrow (Saturday) from 11am-4pm. Also, St John the Baptist, in Lower Church Road, is open tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am to 4pm and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.
- delve into the archives and find information about people and their creativity at the local studies library, in the Town Hall, Walliscote Grove Road. Open tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am to 4pm.

Promoting these events was made possible thanks to financial support from Historic England, as part of Weston’s High Street Heritage Action Zone, a project which will end in March.
Listen to Cara MacMahon, our High Street Heritage Action Zone Officer, talk about Weston’s heritage in the latest Super Weston podcast.
Arts + Health Weekender
Community artwork, shared memories and a big ‘happy birthday’ to the NHS take place in Weston-super-Mare later this month.
The Arts + Health Weekender, which will take place on Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October, includes free-to-attend creative workshops, park yoga, a celebration of song and poetry, and guided walks.
