Young children can make a splash in Portishead when a leisure pool gets an upgrade later this month.

A new interactive aquatic-themed attraction is being added at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, in Harbour Road, which will provide fun for young families.

The features, suitable for children aged eight and under, will include:

•         colourful fish squirts, octopus mast and rocky terrain

•         a water cascade with interactive water channels and paddles to allow the flow of water to be changed

•         interactive play panels featuring a bright underwater design with a series of moving parts and mirrors providing tactile, visual, and auditory stimulation

•         water bowls that can be filled from and emptied back into the pool.

Latest research by Sport England found that fewer than half (44.6 per cent) of children and young people meet the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines of taking part in sport and physical activity for an average of 60 minutes or more every day.

Swimming is a great way to encourage more children into healthier lifestyles so we’re pleased to be investing £28,000 for this improvement work, using funds from a section 106 legal agreement.

This is the money that developers pay towards funding of local infrastructure, which can include leisure facilities.

Places Leisure, which runs the centre, is also investing £14,000 to complete essential maintenance and improvements while the pool is closed.

To enable the work to be carried out, in addition to routine maintenance, the centre’s two pools are planned to close temporarily between Monday 19 December and Tuesday 27 December.

This work coincides with the annual swimming lesson two-week Christmas break, with lessons resuming from Monday 2 January.

The work will not impact other facilities at the centre, including the gym, sports hall and studios, which will remain open as usual.

Access to the improved leisure pool will still be included as part of Places Leisure’s premium memberships, with free entry for up to four juniors.

Find out more about the facilities on the centre’s website.
