A long-awaited 13-mile walking and cycling route between Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare is on target to open this summer.

The Pier to Pier Way is aimed at commuters, leisure users and tourists.

The route has been 40 years in the making and will form the central section of the North Somerset coastal towns cycle route, featuring quiet roads and traffic-free sections.

It also contributes to our commitment of providing sustainable travel routes across the area, supporting our goal of being carbon neutral by 2030 .

The new route will reduce travel distance between Weston and Clevedon town centres by about four miles for non-motorised traffic, and improve safety by avoiding the busy A370.

The Clevedon seafront works, which are almost complete, form the start and end point.

This work has included resurfacing roads, introducing a new 20mph zone, pedestrian crossing points and segregated cycle lanes.

A new traffic-free section is being created at Tutshill greenway and a new bridge, built by Beaver Bridges, was pushed into place on Tuesday over the Congresbury Yeo at Tutshill Sluice.

This bridge will be used by the local farmer for moving cattle and agricultural machinery, while the new cycleway will use the existing river crossings over the Congresbury Yeo and Oldbridge rivers.

Drone footage of the bridge being pushed into place can be seen on the Beaver Bridges LinkedIn page.

This one-mile shared-use path follows a section of old railway line and will enable cyclists, horse riders and walkers to cross the Congresbury Yeo and link to Wick Road, Wick St Lawrence and Yeo Bank Lane in Kingston Seymour.

The £3.1m Pier to Pier to Pier Way is jointly funded by us, National Highways, Sustrans, and the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development.

It’s been made possible through co-operation of local landowners, The Environment Agency, Natural England and Internal Drainage Board.

Cycling and other active travel options are a vital part of our zero carbon ambition because of the immediate reduction in emissions it brings.

There are also significant health and wellbeing benefits to travelling actively.
