We’ve been through a lot in the last couple of years so now might be a good time to check in on our mental and physical health.

This week is Men’s Health Week and the focus is on encouraging men to think about their mental and physical health and to take a ‘Man MOT’.

This means taking notice of what’s going on in your body and mind - taking a DIY Man MOT, getting all the information you can, and contacting your GP or NHS 111 if you’re concerned about any symptoms.

There is also a round-up of North Somerset-based organisations and groups aimed at men on our website.

Our culture is getting better at talking openly about mental health but we still have a way to go and many men feel ashamed about confessing to their own struggles.

The Mental Health Foundation has advice for men, including 15 tips for how to pick yourself up when things get tough.

Ten top tips for keeping well

Top tips for keeping well and looking after yourself can be found in a new leaflet designed by the local NHS.

The leaflet, 10 Ways To Stay Well, has been produced by NHS Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group and delivered to homes across the area.

It’s available online in six different languages as well as an animated version on YouTube.

Top tips include:

  • get self-care aware – from having a well-stocked medicine cabinet to apps you can download
  • get to know your local pharmacy
  • look after your mental wellbeing
  • grab a jab
  • know before you go – contact NHS 111 if you’re not sure.
  • exercise to put a smile on your face
  • register with your local GP practice
  • stay Covid safe
  • get involved with your local community, and
  • get all the information you need.
