Choosing to walk, cycle, or wheel to school is a great way to boost health, reduce traffic congestion and help protect the environment. Whether you’re strolling with little ones or cycling as a family, these paths make the school run more enjoyable and eco-friendly.
Every day, more than 30,000 children and young people travel to schools and sixth forms in North Somerset. That’s over 60,000 journeys each day and around 11.7 million journeys across the 39-week school year. Imagine the difference we could make if more of those were active.
North Somerset is lucky to have a fantastic network of public rights of way, including footpaths, bridleways, and byways that provide safe, scenic routes away from busy roads.
Active travel also boosts mental wellbeing, teaches children independence and gives families quality time. It also helps everyone get their daily steps in close to home.

To support schools in encouraging active travel, the Modeshift STARS School Travel Programme is available free of charge. It’s designed to help schools increase the number of pupils walking, cycling and scooting to school.
