Plastic bags and soft plastic wrapping will be collected from the kerbside from Monday (9 June).

We’re the first council in the UK to collect these items at the kerbside as part of a weekly household recycling service – two years ahead of the UK government deadline.

Our new recycling vehicles have a dedicated space to collect soft plastic wrapping, such as crisp packets, film lids, plastic pouches and vegetable packaging.

These items currently make up about 10 per cent of black bin contents.

From Monday (9 June) you can put small bags of them out for collection, squashed into a bread bag or carrier bag with the air squeezed out and then tied with a knot.

There’s no need to remove barcodes or labels from soft plastics before recycling – just make sure they’re empty and reasonably clean.

Place the bags in your recycling box next to the glass.

Your other recycling container can then be put on top to prevent the bags of soft plastic from blowing away.

Full instructions were included in the information pack sent out to all households.

For the first couple of weeks while we wait for all the new recycling lorries to come into service, some areas will see their plastic bags and soft plastic wrappings collected by a separate vehicle.

If your bag of plastic bags and soft plastic wrappings is left behind, there is no need to contact us. Just leave out your recycling box and it should be collected the same day, probably by a small van.
