Do you know how to separate the huge range of materials you can recycle at home?

From Monday (9 June), we’ll collect more items from the kerbside.

Here’s where to put them:

  • recycling box 1 – glass bottles and jars, plus plastic bags and soft plastic wrapping
  • recycling box 2 – paper and cardboard
  • red bag – plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, plus metal packaging such as tins, cans, foil and empty aerosols
  • brown box - food waste
  • bagged separately – batteries, clothes, small electrical items and vapes.

New recycling vehicles will be out about in North Somerset from next week.

These new vehicles have separate compartments for the different items like the old vehicles. There are larger compartments for collecting batteries, clothes, small electrical items and vapes, to improve the reliability of these collections.

Red recycling bags

Red bags have already been delivered to homes across North Somerset to provide extra space and make recycling easier.

The red bag is bigger than recycling boxes (90-litre capacity compared to 55-litre), is weighted to stop it blowing away, and secures with a Velcro strip across the top to prevent litter.

If you haven’t received your red bag and you live in a property with your own recycling boxes, you can request one on our website.

Food waste

Food waste recycling was introduced in North Somerset 15 years ago as part of the weekly kerbside collections.

However, our recent waste analysis found that more than a quarter (27 per cent) of black bin waste was food waste, with almost half of this being unopened food still in its packaging.

Food waste generates an income of £22 per tonne, compared with a £138 per tonne cost to dispose of black bin waste.

Request a kitchen caddy and a food waste box and find out more about food waste recycling on our website.
