The start of the month saw exciting scenes as a temporary footbridge was swung into place on Winterstoke Road in Weston.

The footbridge, which was installed using a huge 750 tonne crane, has been designed to be step free and will maintain pedestrian access throughout next year’s replacement of Winterstoke Road Bridge.

Due to difficult ground conditions around Winterstoke Road and challenges of working over an active rail line, installation of the footbridge required complex engineering and technical expertise from the project contractors, Octavius.

Replacing Winterstoke Road Bridge

Winterstoke Road Bridge was built during the Second World War and has come to the end of its lifespan. It currently has a weight restriction for heavier vehicles and without replacement would have to close to all traffic permanently within the next five to ten years.

Demolition of the existing bridge is due to start in December, followed by works to build a new bridge that will secure this important route along Winterstoke Road for the next 125 years.

Maintaining pedestrian access

As Winterstoke Road provides a key connection between local communities, schools, jobs and businesses, it’s vital that people living in the immediate area have a choice as to how they get around.

The new footbridge will allow shorter and more manageable journeys to continue being made on foot or by bike, reducing potential traffic and congestion on road diversions when people are able to leave the car at home. Step free access means the footbridge is also suitable for wheelchair users.
