Businesses and organisations across North Somerset have a unique opportunity to take advantage of a range of free support.

Filling skills gaps

Free flexible training is being offered to businesses in North Somerset to fill skills gaps and promote growth in the area.

We’re supporting a programme run by Weston College to support employee development and provide training solutions for businesses of all sizes.

The Moving Up initiative, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), will offer consultations and site visits to understand a business’s specific training needs.

Flexible training options are available, including directing employees to existing training resources, creating customised courses, or offering funding for certain training programmes.

Funding is limited and available until March. For more information email employers@weston.ac.uk

Retail and hospitality support

Free, one-on-one business support is still available to retail or hospitality businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

Support is tailored to your specific needs, whether it’s boosting profits, improving sales, or fine-tuning processes in areas like buying, marketing, cash flow, and financial control.

This might include specialised customer service training, bootcamp-style courses, or one-on-one employee support across various industries.

We’ll handle all initial inquiries and check eligibility through a simple expression of interest and application process.

If you’re eligible, you’ll be referred to Riseley Consulting to get started.

Free Carbon Literacy training for businesses

Businesses and organisations in North Somerset have the chance to undertake free training and find out more about their carbon footprint.

Carbon Literacy Action Day on Thursday 14 November is the world's largest climate education and action training event, coinciding with COP29.

Carbon Literacy is the understanding of the causes and impacts of our everyday greenhouse gas emissions, and what we can do to reduce them.

On the day we’re hosting free online training via Teams for small to medium enterprises (SMEs), and voluntary, community and social enterprises in North Somerset.

Becoming Carbon Literate means taking actionable steps towards tackling the climate emergency.

You’ll have an opportunity to understand the causes and effects of climate change and how it may affect your business or organisation, and what you can do to address the impacts.

The training is usually £125 per person but is being offered for free during Carbon Literacy Action Week.

To register your interest, email the climate emergency team at climate.emergency@n-somerset.gov.uk by Thursday (31 October).
