Fifteen easy-to-use thermal imaging cameras are available to borrow from any North Somerset library, including the mobile library service, for one week.
The cameras use infrared technology to find heat loss problem spots in your home.
Common areas include small gaps around doors, windows and exterior outlets like letterboxes, and connections to outside the home, such as plumbing fixtures.
These small home fixes can help reduce your carbon emissions as well as save money on energy bills.
Here in North Somerset, energy consumption in our homes accounts for 23 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions.
We’re committed to tackling the climate emergency, and reducing energy use is a key component in the council’s plans to reach net zero by 2030.
The loan scheme launched last year and was incredibly popular.
Due to heavy demand, we’re serving customers on a waiting list before accepting new ones.

Help to install energy-saving upgrades
Homeowners and private tenants in North Somerset who haven’t been able to install energy-saving upgrades, such as insulation or solar panels, can now apply for funding.
The Enabling Works Fund, funded through our share of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, covers the costs needed to prepare homes for energy-saving improvements.
The fund is managed by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) and can help with work such as:
- clearing or removing boards from lofts
- expanding loft hatches
- removing debris for wall insulation
- setting up scaffolding for insulation work
- fixing structural issues like damaged brickwork
- cleaning roofs and removing bird netting
- solving issues with felting wires.
