Things will soon be getting spooky in North Somerset with lots of family-friendly events for everyone to enjoy.

Halloween is on the horizon but if high prices are still scaring you, there are lots of ways to have free or low-cost fun during the school holiday.

Here are some highlights of activities taking place next week:

  • people of all ages can get involved in a treasure hunt style activity along the Strawberry Line, from Yatton Railway Station. The fun, free Big Recycling Hunt is now on as part of national Recycle Week, which runs until Sunday (22 October). However, the treasure hunt has been extended until Sunday 29 October so families can enjoy it during the school holidays. Find all the letters to reveal a hidden phrase and enter a free prize draw to win vouchers for Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, Court Farm Country Park and Simply Green Zero Waste in Nailsea. Find out more on our website.
  • Dr Who fans can head down to free-to-enter Weston Museum from tomorrow (Saturday), for its latest exhibition. Adventures in Time and Space - 60 years of Doctor Who is a nostalgia-filled celebration of six decades of the hit show, featuring the largest collection of original and digital art from the programme ever shown in one place. See the display, at the Burlington Street museum, until Saturday 27 January. Staff and volunteers at the museum are also creating a mammoth scarf during the time the exhibition is on, and a free drop-in knitting session takes place on Tuesday (October 24). No need to book, just buy a starter pack from the museum shop and find an available helper in the museum’s Learning Space, from 10am-2pm. Once completed, the scarf will be cut to standard lengths and donated to the Warm Bundles Project.
  • a fun-packed interactive rock show suitable for both small and big kids is coming to the Front Room Theatre, in Weston-super-Mare from tomorrow (Saturday). Kid Carpet’s Extra Super Mega Rocking’ Rock Show features the catchiest songs, games, puppetry and video projection. It runs for three days, until Monday (23 October).
  • step back to the ‘90s and take your children raving during a Halloween party at the Tropicana, in Weston-super-Mare, on Monday (22 October). The family-friendly RaveKidz party is from 2pm-5pm.
  • Spooktacular activities including children’s disco and magic and comedy shows take place at Puxton Park, in Hewish, next week. Activities run from Monday to Friday (23 to 27 October).
  • Clip ‘n Climb is celebrating its fifth birthday in Dolphin Square, Weston-super-Mare, with a special birthday party next Wednesday (25 October). Climb for up to two hours, with a disco and party games throughout. For ages four to 14.
  • is your child a budding games designer? A game pixel design session runs at Yatton Library on Thursday 26 October, from 10am-noon. Participants will create characters and design game levels. Suitable for eight to 12-year-olds. Register online. Lots of free activities and events regularly take place in our libraries. They are free to join and you can borrow a wide range of books, comics and e-books, as well as joining in the many activities on offer.

For more ideas for days out, join a local Facebook group such as Things to do with kids in North Somerset, or Things to do in Portishead and Bristol with kids.

It’s also the perfect time of year to get outdoors and enjoy nature’s autumn treat of golden leaves. Visit one of North Somerset’s beautiful parks or open spaces, or join an organised health walk to explore your local area.

Woods and wildlife provide lots of inspiration for young thrill-seekers and so the Woodland Trust has 13 Halloween nature crafts and activities for children on its website.

There are also spooktacular pumpkin carving tips on the BBC Good Food website.

To help make your money stretch further, Money Saving Central has updated its round-up of places where children can eat free or for £1 during school holidays.
