This key document shapes where new homes, jobs and essential infrastructure could be delivered over the next 15 years.
The updated plan sets out how the area will grow sustainably between 2026 and 2041, proposing around 24,495 new homes and 72 hectares of employment land.
It also highlights the infrastructure needed to support that growth, including road improvements, public transport routes, schools, medical facilities and green spaces.
Following a significant increase in housing targets set by central government, we are calling for fair, infrastructure-led growth that delivers the homes local people need, alongside the essential services they rely on.
Most new housing remains focused in and around Weston-super-Mare and at Wolvershill, to the north of Banwell. However, due to the increased government housing targets, three new strategic growth areas are also proposed:
- Woodspring (southwest of Bristol)
- Nailsea and Backwell
- Pill and Easton-in-Gordano.
Once adopted, the Local Plan will guide sustainable development across North Somerset, with a focus on low-carbon, energy-efficient homes and ensuring new growth is delivered alongside necessary infrastructure and environmental protections.
The updated plan also reflects recent changes to Green Belt policy, settlement boundaries, affordable housing requirements and new transport priorities, including routes for walking, cycling and public transport.
The consultation runs until 5pm on Friday 12 December 2025.
All comments will be reviewed before the plan is submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for independent examination in 2026.
