Tackling ageism in North Somerset

Nearly half of North Somerset’s population is over 50 and so we want to make sure they have a voice.

Voluntary Action North Somerset has launched its five-year Improving Ageing in North Somerset (IANS) project thanks to funding from The National Lottery.

It aims to make North Somerset a place where older people’s knowledge, experience and skills are valued, their views and ideas are included in discussions about new plans, services and facilities, and they all feel welcomed and included.

To do this, ‘age champions’ will be recruited to promote positive views about ageing and challenging ageism; organisations will work together to provide Good Neighbour Schemes in rural parts of North Somerset; and webinars and training will run to promote understanding about later life.

Local forums are also being set up for people aged 65 and over to contribute ideas over a cuppa.

The next drop-in event takes place at Locking Castle Church, in Weston-super-Mare, from 11am-2.30pm next Wednesday (20 November).

An online session will also be held from 7pm-8pm on Tuesday 3 December.

For more information email IANS@vansmail.org.uk or call 01934 416 486.

Free blankets and beanies to keep warm

Free blankets and cosy beanie hats are available for free to help people keep warm at home during emergency situations.

The blankets and beanies programme is for more vulnerable people who are struggling to stay warm, whether because of a broken boiler or if they’re having a hard time keeping the heating on.

The programme is funded by us and delivered by Access Your Care.

It’s for residents who need extra warmth, so not available for homeless support.

If you or someone you know could use a bit of warmth, call Access Your Care on 01275 874 861 and press option 5 for the Response 24 and Wellness services.

A responder will deliver the items once the application has been reviewed and accepted.
