A host of organisations will be offering free advice and support to help you take control of your health as the colder weather sets in.
Winter can be bad for our health, especially for older people or those with long-term conditions.
It can pose health risks and respiratory illnesses, such as the flu and covid, circulate more.
Plus, with the nights getting darker and colder, it can be harder to stay active. Many people also find the reduced daylight hours can affect their mental health.
To help support you during this period, the free health promotion day takes place at the We Are Super studios, in the Sovereign, Weston-super-Mare, from 10am to 2pm on Thursday 30 November.
Organisations at the event include:
- Smokefree North Somerset, providing free support to help people quit smoking for good
- Better Health North Somerset, offering help to eat well, get active, lose weight and more
- our housing advice team
- Alright my Liver, offering free liver testing that can help diagnose liver disease
- VitaMinds, who work with the NHS to provide free talking therapy services in North Somerset
- social prescribers from Citizens Advice North Somerset, who can connect people to activities, groups, and services to meet the practical, social and emotional needs affecting their health and wellbeing
- a vaccination team from the University of the West of England (UWE) will be on hand to give flu jabs to people aged 18 and above who are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination and people aged 12 and over who are eligible for a Covid-19 booster jab
- services from Weston Hospital
- Healthwatch North Somerset
- Sirona Care and Health
- We Are With You - a local charity commissioned by the council to support people and help them recover from addiction
- Addiction Recovery for All (ARA) – a charity helping people recover from mental health, drug and alcohol and gambling problems.
No need to book in advance, just turn up on the day.
Nurture a healthy workplace
Are you an employer, business or organisation who’d like to know more about supporting the health and wellbeing of your staff?
Lots of us spend a significant amount of time at our place of work so this environment plays a key role in our health and wellbeing.
We think having a healthy and productive workforce should be every organisation’s ambition.
The free Healthy Workplaces event takes place from 10am to 3.30pm on Friday 24 November at the Winter Gardens in Weston-super-Mare.
Experts will be on-hand with information and advice, including the Better Health North Somerset team sharing information about our Healthy Workplaces Awards programme.
Hear a series of talks about the positive changes you could make in your workplace and access tools and advice to support employees, with mental health, physical activity, stopping smoking, menopause, men’s health, musculoskeletal health, alcohol and substance use and financial wellbeing.
We’ll have a marketplace of stalls as well as bitesize workshops.
The event is completely free to attend but book a ticket in advance online. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
