National HGV driver shortage stops garden waste service

A national shortage of HGV drivers means we’ve had to suspend our garden waste collections until at least Saturday 18 September.

We’ve tried hard to keep the garden waste collection service running as normally as possible over recent weeks but we’ve now had to make the difficult decision to stop.

Recycling and black bin waste collections continue as normal.

Neighbouring councils suspended their services earlier in the summer but we’ve continued collections - with limited disruption - until now.

However, we’ve reached the point where the national shortage of drivers means we can’t provide all services.

HGV driver recruitment is an issue affecting the whole country.

We’re working hard to fix the situation locally and we’re also lobbying government to resolve this national crisis.

You can also hear Cllr Mike Solomon, executive member for neighbourhoods and community services, explaining the situation in this video on our YouTube channel. To see subtitles, you'll need to make sure the captions icon is set to 'on'.

A message from Cllr Mike Solomon about garden waste collections

We are really sorry for the inconvenience caused and we’re working out ways to compensate our customers.

Our recycling centres are open as normal if you want to take your garden waste there.

Home composting is also a good way to deal with any additional garden waste generated.
