More improvements are set to be made to the eagerly anticipated Pier to Pier Way between Weston and Clevedon thanks to £500,000 of grant funding.

Access for pedestrians and cyclists in Clevedon will be improved thanks to this external funding from the Department for Transport.

This additional scheme includes a range of improvements to The Beach and Hill Road, including a 20mph area to improve how people move around Clevedon.

Wider pavements, more informal place to cross roads and lower traffic speeds will help encourage more people to visit the town on foot and by bike.

New segregated cycle lanes will also complement the Pier to Pier route.

To make these changes, there will be a one-way layout for The Beach and Hill Road, and additional car parking will be available on Elton Road.

These improvements received cross-party support from our councillors and other key community groups including Clevedon Town Council, Clevedon Business Improvement District, the Pier Trust and other interested parties.

These groups were involved in developing the scheme and changes were made following a consultation last year in which more than 1,000 people took part

Work to Hill Road will start after Easter and work to The Beach will start in the autumn, after the busy summer period.

When the £3.1m Pier to Pier Way is completed, it will provide an attractive new route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders between Weston and Clevedon.

It is jointly funded by us, National Highways, the Department for Transport through Sustrans, and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

Active travel is a vital part of our zero carbon ambition because of the immediate reduction in emissions it brings.

There are also significant health and wellbeing benefits to travelling actively.
