Together with Somerset County Council, we’ve jointly secured an additional £317,694 from the Home Office Safer Streets Fund.
It’s part of the national Safer Streets campaign, aimed at changing perpetrator behaviour and encouraging conversations that challenge misogynistic attitudes, as well as discouraging inappropriate behaviour towards women and girls.
It follows a successful bid last year and the campaign ‘It can stop if we change together’.
This additional funding means we can continue the work for another year.
The money will be used for a range of activities, including education and training programmes, public engagement events, women’s outreach services and 18 additional CCTV cameras across our two combined local authority areas.
We’ll also focus on tackling anti-social behaviour in Weston-super-Mare.
A new Safer Streets van will also be out and about across the area, which will be used to run drop-ins, roadshows and awareness raising events.
It will also double-up as a mobile office so officers can work within hotspot areas to maximise visibility.
This Safer Streets project is hugely important, as inappropriate words or actions against women and girls are simply not acceptable.
We want perpetrators to think about how their behaviour makes people feel and we are committed to improving safety for women and girls in public places across our area.
