Events to kick-off summer fun

The sun continues to shine, so make the most of our outdoor spaces in the coming weeks.

Try free yoga in the park, see outstanding outdoor arts performances, relax to the sounds of jazz, or step back in time to the 1940s.

  • An author is visiting Portishead Library tomorrow (Saturday) to talk about her latest work. Local author and creative writing tutor Rosemary Dun will be at the library talking about her new novel, The Trouble with Love. See details of all upcoming events on our library Eventbrite page.
  • Free ParkPlay sessions utilise the power of play to build happier, healthier communities every Saturday morning. Have fun taking part in a variety of games and activities in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment. Visit Castle Batch Green Space, Worle, from 9.30am to 11am, and Merlin Park, Portishead, from 10am to 11.30am every Saturday. ParkPlay is looking to expand into different areas.   • Free yoga in the park has returned for the summer season. Sessions take place from 9.30am to 10.30am every Sunday until 14 September, in Ellenborough Park, Weston-super-Mare. Look out for the Park Yoga flag. No need to book, just bring a mat or towel.
  • A fun-filled community adventure is coming to Worle this weekend. Worle Village Primary School is hosting a Walking Treasure Hunt from 11am to 2pm on Sunday (18 May). Follow a clue-filled walking trail around Worle, followed by on-site activities at the school. The scavenger hunt is open to all the community and suitable for all ages, with prizes to be won. Entry costs £5 in advance or £7 on the day (if slots remain). All money goes to supporting the school.
  • A boot stompin’ lineup can be heard during the Banwell Country and Western Weekend, at Court Farm in Banwell, from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 May. Enjoy the fun, whether you’re a Westerner, listener or line dancer.
  • More than 100 local producers will sell their wares at free food and drink festivals this month. eat:Portishead is on from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 25 May around the marina.
  • Bossa nova and Latin jazz will be filling Grove Park, in Weston-super-Mare, on Sunday 25 May. Enjoy a relaxed afternoon of music from Bristol-based band Zubieta and Staves, on the bandstand from 4pm.
  • Outstanding performances of outdoor art return to Weston-super-Mare next month during Super Culture’s award-winning, flagship festival, Whirligig. The family-friendly weekend includes a free, daytime programme on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June, with festival acts from across the UK and Europe. New locations will be used this year, to link up the town with the seafront. This year, there will also be 'pay-what-you-decide' evening performances on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June for the international show, MDR – Death From Laughter by Los Galindos – a farce about friendship, an improbable crime, a suspicious trial and an absurd punishment.
  • Over-50s in Nailsea can join a special celebration of music, movement, and connection for free. The Age Without Limit Day, at the Tithe Barn on Thursday 12 June, is lively day of dancing and delicious food, designed to get people moving and smiling. Choose either the morning or afternoon slot with line dancing or barn dancing, and a complimentary lunch. Everything is free, and transport can be provided if needed.   • Step back in time and enjoy a living, breathing tribute to Britain’s wartime home front. The Dig For Victory Show is at North Somerset Showground in Wraxall, on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 June. Explore the sights, sounds and stories of wartime Britain through hand-on learning, re-enactments and the special 1940s farm.
