Brisk walking can help build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier.
It’s also free and simple so ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels, allowing you to explore new places and have fun.
Throughout this month, we’ve been organising activities for the first North Somerset Walk Fest, to tie in with National Walking Month, to encourage people to stretch those legs and take a stroll around the area.
Although we’re half way through the month, there is still time to get involved and help make it a habit for life.
There are lots of ways to get involved:
- pick up a programme – packed with information about walks and events happening in and around North Somerset, from guided walks and walking sports to networking walks. Each has a note to say whether it is wheelchair, mobility scooter, visually impaired or buggy friendly. Pick up a copy from your local library or visit the Better Health North Somerset website
- walking cafes – head to one to pick up a local walking route map. Some cafés are also offering a discount to Walk Fest participants
- walk every day – challenge yourself to walk for as long as suits you, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day. Download a calendar from the Better Health website and track your progress.
- walking groups – check out walking groups or start your own. Our Better Health team can offer training to get you started
- walking routes – follow mapped routes across North Somerset, including accessible routes which are suitable for people who have limited mobility. Each route is up to six miles in distance.
