We still don’t know when a general election will be this year – but you can vote for a new Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner this May.

You can have your say on who the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) should be on Thursday 2 May but you must be registered to vote first.

You must be on the electoral register to be able to vote.

The deadline to register is midnight on Tuesday 16 April and it takes just five minutes.

Once registered, you’ll then be ready for the general election, whenever it is called.

The PCC oversees your local police force and makes sure  they are prioritising what matters to you.

The Avon and Somerset police area includes ourselves, Bath and North East Somerset Council, Bristol City Council, Somerset Council and South Gloucestershire Council.

A notice of election was published on Monday (18 March) and the nomination period for prospective candidates opened on Tuesday (19 March).

Poll cards have started to be posted out this week for those who are already registered.

If you’d prefer a postal vote, the deadline to apply is 5pm on Wednesday 17 April.

When voting in person at a polling station you are now required to present an accepted photo ID before being issued with their ballot paper.

If you don’t have an accepted photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate before 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.

You could also appoint someone you trust to vote in your place, known as a proxy vote

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.

If you’ve recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important that you act to ensure that you are registered to vote.

If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you don’t need to take any action.
