- Watch the people who collect our waste and recycling compete against colleagues from across the UK in a test of strength and stamina. Help cheer on North Somerset’s crews during the National Refuse Championships tomorrow (Saturday) on Weston-super-Mare’s seafront. The first races take place between 10am and noon, with the finals then taking place between 1pm and 3.30pm. They are free to watch, with fun rides for young children and food and drink served. Staff from North Somerset Environment Company will also be on-hand giving information about job opportunities and demonstrating the Quatro vehicle used in the recent recycling trial.
- Portishead author Rosemary Dun will be speaking about her latest work, under the pen name Rosie Parker, at Portishead Library, tomorrow (Saturday), from 10.30am. Her latest book, Only Hummingbirds Fly Backwards, is a heartfelt, family story delving into the very real stresses and tension that can destroy the seams of a relationship. It is a celebration of love and the human spirit. Tickets are free but spaces must be pre-booked online.
- Join the 100 year celebrations and Festival of Culture from 11am to 3pm tomorrow (Saturday) at Broadoak Academy in Weston-super-Mare. Enjoy food from around the world, sports, music and dancing displays, an exhibition to mark 100 Years of Broadoak Academy plus much more. The event is free.
- A packed afternoon of family entertainment can be found from noon tomorrow (Saturday) during the community celebration Worle Fest. The event, from noon at the @worle centre, in New Bristol Road, Weston-super-Mare, features inflatables, a children’s entertainer, Disney princesses, dance and more. - Explore Myths and Monsters during an exhibition of artwork from some of our best loved children’s stories, at Weston Museum, in Burlington Street, Weston-super-Mare. meet a motley crew of fantastic beasts, from the Gruffalo to the Iron Man, from fearsome dragons to monsters of the deep, and even monsters in underpants. The exhibition is open daily Tuesday to Saturday, from Tuesday 20 June to Saturday 7 October.
- Readers and writers of crime and thriller novels can hear three local authors in conversation about their writing. Brian Price, Ben Mears and Mike Leonard, the Crime Times Three, appear from 7pm at Clevedon Library on Wednesday 21 June. Tickets are free but spaces must be pre-booked online.
- See comedian, actor and writer Simon Day on stage at the Blakehay Theatre, in Wadham Street, Weston-super-Mare, on Friday 23 June. Simon is appearing as eco warrior Dave Angel, the man who invented saving the planet and has dedicated his life to lowering carbon emissions.
- Sample a wide variety of different beers and ciders and help raise money for charity during the annual Lions Claverham Beer and Cider Festival, on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 June. This year’s proceeds will help support local Lions' projects. Advance tickets £12 or £15 on the door.
