Free fun for all this month

The summer season is getting under way with many free events happening, providing fun for all the family.

  • A summer of live music starts in Clevedon tomorrow (Saturday) with the arrival of the town’s very first public piano, in Queen’s Square. The launch event is from 2pm to 6pm, to celebrate and encourage live music for everyone. Clevedon-based composer Chris Hope will be premiering a brand new piece, written specially to mark the occasion. Clevedon Live Music Festival then starts on Saturday 6 September.
  • A heartfelt and action-packed day is taking place tomorrow (Saturday) in Weston-super-Mare to mark Armed Forces and Emergency Services Day. The free family-friendly event, on the Beach Lawns, features military vehicles, equipment and activities.
  • Pride is being celebrated across North Somerset this summer. Events are happening throughout June in Weston-super-Mare to shine a light on what the town has to offer. On Sunday 29 June, Weston Independent Market will host a special Pride edition in Weston at the Italian Gardens. Then Clevedon Pride takes place Saturday 5 July from noon-5pm at The Old Inn in Walton Road, and Nailsea Pride is on Saturday 2 August from noon-5pm at the White Lion in Silver Street.
  • Roller fun is returning to Hutton Moor leisure centre in Weston-super-Mare, on Friday 27 June. Visit for roller skating fun, games and great music. Bring your own skates or hire them on the night.
  • Step back in time to the 70s and help Weston Museum celebrate its 50th birthday. The Burlington Street museum is hosting a free party from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 28 June. Enjoy a retro 1970s sweet stall, dance performances, 70s-style food and drink at Clara’s Café, face painting for all ages and more. The 50th birthday exhibition,  is also now on until Thursday 3 July
  • Fans of VWs can see scores of their favourite vehicles during this year’s Cruise to the Prom on Sunday 6 July. Visit the Beach Lawns, Weston-super-Mare, for club displays, traders, merchandise and activities. This year’s event is raising funds for Weston Hospicecare. Pedestrian entry is by donation only. Go straight to the Beach Lawns from 9.30am. The official cruise to the event, with up to 200 VWs in convoy, leaves Sanders Garden Centre on the A38 at 9.30am.
  • A free interactive puppetry show which tackles important issues with absurd humour is coming to Clevedon next month. The Last Baguette’s show Bin Rat uses live music, physical comedy, puppetry, visual storytelling and silliness to take a look into refuse and recycling. Rummage through the rubble with Bin Rat and her friends from Squeaky Clean Street Cleaners to discover where all the junk goes. The show, suitable for all ages, can be seen at 11am and 2pm on Sunday 27 July in Queen’s Square, Clevedon.
  • Free ParkPlay sessions utilise the power of play to build happier, healthier communities every Saturday morning. Have fun taking part in a variety of games and activities in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment. Visit Castle Batch Green Space, Worle, from 9.30am to 11am, and Merlin Park, Portishead, from 10am to 11.30am every Saturday. ParkPlay is looking to expand into different areas.   • Free yoga in the park has returned for the summer season. Sessions take place from 9.30am to 10.30am every Sunday until 14 September, in Ellenborough Park, Weston-super-Mare. Look out for the Park Yoga flag. No need to book, just bring a mat or towel.
