Pioneering changes to make recycling easier and reduce waste in North Somerset are under way across the area.

Last week we began collecting plastic bags and soft plastic wrapping as part of our weekly household recycling collections - the first council in the country to provide this service to households across the area.

Collection days also changed from last week and we’re now emptying black bins three-weekly instead of fortnightly for most residents.

Our officers have been out and about checking how things are going and we’re really pleased to see the majority of bins being put out on the right day.

Plastic bags and soft plastic wrapping recycling has also been higher than anticipated.

Thank you to everyone for giving it a go and for your patience during this time.

Check your collection information online and download our North Somerset Council app to receive notifications and never miss a bin day again.

More than 21,500 residents have already downloaded the free app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for Android.

We want to make North Somerset a thriving and sustainable place to live, work and visit.

As well as making recycling easier to protect the environment, our new collection service will also generate savings of more than £1m a year to fund vital local services.

Plastic bags and soft plastic wrapping includes items such as crisp packets, film lids, plastic pouches and vegetable packaging.

You can put these out for collection in your recycling box with your glass bottles and jars, squashed into a bread bag or carrier bag and tied with a knot to squeeze all the air out.

An analysis of the waste North Somerset households put in their black bins found that almost half (45 per cent) could have been recycled.

We know households are different so some may be eligible for additional waste capacity.

Waste minimisation officers can also provide advice on managing waste, or read more about food waste recycling.

We’re asking everyone to give it a go. You may be surprised to find you can fit all your waste in your bin.

There are no changes to garden waste collections as this is a stand-alone service.
