Free bus travel will be available for all children and young people under the age of 16 throughout the school summer holidays, within North Somerset and the West of England.
No registration or bus pass needed - they can just hop on board for free from Saturday 19 July to Friday 5 September.
Dozens of free activities will be taking place across the region this summer so keep an eye on the Travelwest website for a handy list which will be published online, along with journey planning information.
About 150,000 children and young people could benefit from this initiative, which covers North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, and South Gloucestershire.
It’s hot-on-the-heels of free bus use being extended for all care leavers up to the age of 25, all-day free travel for disabled people, and news that the West of England is set to receive a record £752m of transport funding for better buses, more trains and mass transit.
Fewer car journeys means less congestion and cleaner air for everyone and this initiative is a ticket to opportunity and connection as well as a greener future.
Adults can also make the most of some of the lowest fares in the country following the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority and North Somerset Council working with First Bus to keep fares for most passengers 20 per cent lower than the government’s £3 cap.
The free summer initiative is on all registered commercial and supported bus services with limited exemptions, such as the airport services.
Children under five already travel for free on the majority of services in the West of England.
This summer initiative is subject to the final approvals process being completed, as agreed and delegated by committee in January.
It is being funded using some of the £13.5m of Bus Grant funding secured from the Department for Transport by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
