The summer season is now here so take time out to enjoy what’s on our doorstep.
- Tantalising tales told with spontaneous theatre, live music and song will be heard in Weston-super-Mare tomorrow (Saturday). The Song of the Forest is a family performance by Wild Words’ Michael Loader and Simon Blakeman. See the show at 11am, at the Front Room Theatre, in Dolphin Square. Pay what you decide and under 2s go free.
- Sample some delicious real ales and ciders from local brewers and help raise money for charity when the popular Real Ale and Cider Festival returns to Weston’s Beach Lawns. The event, organised by Weston Lions, is now in its 15th year and has raised more than £330,000 for charity in that time. Open from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 July.
- Have you ever wondered what happens to the toilet water once you flush it away? Wessex Water is opening the gates of the Weston Water Recycling Centre to give people the opportunity to see first-hand what happens in the waste treatment process. The centre, in Accommodation Road, is open 2pm-6pm on Friday 26 July for groups, and 2pm-5.30pm on Saturday 27 July for individuals and families. Book a free ticket through Eventbrite.
- Enjoy a combination of a traditional flower and produce show and a country fair when the annual Portishead Summer Show returns on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July. This community event, which began in 1863, features circus skills workshops, giant tortoises, live music, fun sports, and more. Tickets available in advance online or on the gate.
- The sounds of the sea will fill the air when the Sea Shanty and Folk Music Festival returns to Weston-super-Mare from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 August. Free entry to various venues around the town and seafront. Food and drink in the Italian Gardens.
- Discover local independent makers, producers, crafters, artists and more at Clevedon Sunday Market, from 10am-2pm on Sunday 4 August.
- Pick some tasty local produce at the popular eat:Portishead food and drink festival. Stalls will be at the marina from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 10 August.
- Teams from across the UK will be battling it out on the sands during the Beach Rugby and Netball Festival. Watch the squads play on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August.
- Enjoy a traditional flower show with the best locally-grown flowers, fruits and vegetables, handicrafts, art, baking and more. Clevedon Flower Show, held on Salthouse Fields, takes place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August.
