School holidays are nearly here so we’ve launched a new water safety campaign so people can have fun safely at Weston’s seafront.
The Severn Estuary has the second-highest tidal range in the world and so the tide comes in very quickly.
Soft sand and sinking mud are revealed when the tide is out. It’s easy to get stuck in, which could lead to a potentially deadly situation if the tide comes back in when you’re stuck.
We want everyone to have fun and stay safe by the water so we’ve worked with Avon Fire and Rescue Service, the RNLI and HM Coastguard to remind people how to keep themselves and those around them safe.
As part of the campaign a series of safety videos and tips are being released on the Weston Seafront Facebook page.
These include a general water safety video presented by our seafront ranger team which features a staged rescue of a dummy stuck in the mud to show how quickly things can change.
Another video highlights the dangers of tombstoning – jumping from a high spot into water – from Knightstone Island.
To stay safe at Weston’s seafront, follow these tips:
- check the weather forecast and tide times before heading out
- bring a charged mobile phone with you
- don’t walk into the mud when the tide is out – you might get stuck
- know where the exit points are on the beach
- follow advice on the warning signs
- if you do get trapped – or see someone else who’s stuck – call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
