Get set for a summer of sport, games, physical activity – and reading.

The popular annual Summer Reading Challenge, produced by The Reading Agency and available through our libraries, is now open for children aged four to 11.

This year’s theme – Read, Set, Read! – aims to inspire children to get their minds and bodies active.

The challenge is completely free, just pop along to your local library to sign up.

Each child will be given a free collector’s folder when they register, followed by a free scented sticker for each book they read.

Children who complete the challenge by reading or listening to six books of their choice by Saturday 9 September will collect a certificate and a medal (while stocks last).

Free events to celebrate the Summer Reading Challenge will also take place in libraries throughout the summer.

  • Magical storytelling sessions will bring some sparkle for those aged under five and their families. Theatre Orchard is hosting free sessions in libraries across the area in August. Contact individual libraries to book:

Free sport-themed art and craft activities are also being held throughout our libraries this summer.

Children can make their own blow football, cheerleader pompoms, basketball or balloon table tennis to take home. Contact your local library to pre-book a place.
