Extreme weather events around the world – from scorching heatwaves to devastating floods – show that climate change is here and affecting us already.

Last year was officially the hottest on record, with new global air temperature highs almost every day from July.

The UK also had its second warmest year on record in 2023, according to the Met Office.

While climate change is already here, it’s important to remember there is still time for us to act.

The UK is well-placed to set an example to the world in addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.

In December we hosted a Carbon Literacy Action Day and as a result have won the 2023 Carbon Literacy Action Day (CLAD) Catalyst Award from The Carbon Literacy Project, in recognition of our commitment to tackling the climate emergency and shifting to a net zero future.

The event was the largest ever in-person Carbon Literacy training event, attended by 175 people from local businesses and community groups who wanted to kickstart their journey to net zero.

Carbon Literacy is the understanding of the causes and impacts of our everyday greenhouse gas emissions, and attendees pledge to take specific climate actions to reduce emissions.

The pledges made on the day will reduce carbon emissions across North Somerset by an estimated 135 tonnes.

The training event, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, also featured talks from well-known climate industry speakers, including a motivational video recorded especially for the event by television presenter and climate campaigner Chris Packham.

We’re continuing to work to create a thriving and sustainable North Somerset. Find out how you can take climate action to help create a healthier, happier, greener North Somerset for everyone by visiting our website.

Maybe you could have one car-free day per week, turn down the heating a degree or two, have a meat-free day at least once a week, grow flowers, plants, trees, herbs, fruit or vegetables, or help spread the word about what you’re doing.

You could also share your tips and meet like-minded people on the Climate Action North Somerset Facebook group.

It’s never too late to start and even if you think your own actions won’t make a difference - they do when those actions are multiplied by many individuals.
