Are you aware of your home’s flood risk and what to do if a flood happened?

The Environment Agency’s Flood Action Campaign has now launched in Weston-super-Mare to increase awareness and let people know the simple steps they can take to prepare for flooding.

Over the coming weeks leaflets will be posted through doors, posters will be put up and we’ll be hosting free drop-in sessions across the town with specialists from the Environment Agency.

In Weston the network of embankments, sand dunes and flood walls, that are maintained and operated by us and the Environment Agency, are very effective at protecting properties when water levels rise.

However, no defence can provide a guarantee against flooding and the recent Babet, Ciaran and Henk storms have shown the devastating impact that flooding can have on communities and businesses.

Climate change will cause wetter winters and drier summers. We will also see more frequent and more powerful storms, which are likely to cause localised flooding.

Sea levels have already begun to rise as a direct result of climate change. Over the next 100 years, they are predicted to rise by a further 1.2m.

Planning ahead and knowing what actions to take can significantly reduce the potential impacts of flooding on your home, health and wellbeing.

The key actions to keep you safe are:

  • plan where to move your valuables
  • know how to turn off gas, electricity and water
  • pack a bag of essentials in advance.

Come and speak to specialists about what you can do to protect your home.
