Over 85,000 people survive a stroke every year in the UK, but surviving a stroke is just the start of a long recovery journey.

The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing life-long support for all stroke survivors and their families and has a Stroke Recovery Service dedicated to serving North Somerset residents.

If you’ve had a stroke, they’re there to help. A Stroke Association Support Co-ordinator will work with you to identify your priorities and what’s important to you so that they can best support you to rebuild your life after stroke.

They offer:

  • someone to talk to who understands
  • tips to support your recovery
  • information about stroke and access to other local services
  • information on how to reduce your risk of stroke
  • the chance to share experiences with others in a similar situation
  • home visits, telephone and online support
  • six-month post-stroke reviews to check your progress.

They’re able to accept referrals up to 12 months post-stroke for anyone registered with a North Somerset GP. They run communication workshops for people whose speech is affected by stroke and have communication support volunteers that can offer individual support.

They attend the stroke ward at Weston General Hospital twice a month, once for a ward information drop-in for patients and carers and again for a hospital peer support café.

There are also stroke support groups in Weston-super-Mare, Nailsea, Portishead, Clevedon, a stroke carers group and one especially for young stroke survivors which meets in Weston and Nailsea.
