Communities are coming together across North Somerset to shake off the winter blues and welcome in the new year…
- Brighten up the dark winter evenings with a unique and thrilling experience. Mendip Activity Centre, in Churchill, has launched Disco Tobogganing for the first time, now on each evening until Sunday 23 February. The open-air toboggan slope is a favourite with visitors and now there is a groovy twist to the activity. Book tickets online.
- Take part in a Somerset tradition and wake up the apple trees from their winter slumber at a popular Wassail event. Gather around the fire, learn traditional Wassail songs and enjoy homemade food. Hutton will be warding off evil spirits during its Wassail tomorrow (Saturday), from 6pm-11.30pm. A walk around the village will finish at the village hall, with Morris dancing, sea shanties and a live band. Tickets from Ticketsource.
- Talented musicians will be playing enchanting music during a free show in Weston-super-Mare. Singer songwriter Beth Rowley, US musician Guthrie Kennard and local legend Pete Lane are appearing at Loves Café, in West Street, tomorrow (Saturday), from 7.30pm. Middle Eastern influenced food will be served. Email anna@lovesweston.co.uk or call 01934 645 672 to book a table. This is a free entry show, but a hat will be passed around for donations to the musicians.
- Get your skates on for another roller disco in Weston-super-Mare. Eleven Roller Disco returns to Hutton moor Leisure Centre, on Friday 24 January. Visit for skating fun, games and great music.
- A special event will be taking place in Congresbury to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. The event, organised by Holocaust Memorial Day North Somerset is from 7.30pm-10pm on Saturday 25 January, at the Old School Rooms. Hear powerful stories from survivors, reflect on the importance of remembrance, and stand united in ensuring such atrocities are never repeated. The event is free and but ticket only. Book your ticket through Eventbrite. Households across the UK are also being encouraged to light a candle and safely put it in their windows (you could also use an LED candle) at 8pm on Monday 27 January to remember those who were murdered for who they were and to stand against prejudice today. - Snake-themed art and crafts, music, dance, poetry, cooking activities and more can be enjoyed by families to help celebrate the Lunar New Year Festival. All families are invited to join the fun, from 11am-4pm on Saturday 1 February at Oldmixon Family Centre in Monkton Avenue, Weston-super-Mare.
- Hear a string trio perform the much-loved music of Coldplay during an enchanting church concert. The Coldplay Candlelight Experience is from 7pm-8pm on Saturday 1 February, at St John the Baptist Parish Church, in Lower Church Road, Weston-super-Mare. Tickets from Kaboodle.
- Step back in time to 1999 and dance the afternoon away. Dancing in the Daylight: The Ultimate Adult Disco celebrates the best music and fun of the '80s '90s & ‘00s without the late night. Exclusively for ages 25 and over, from 2pm-7pm on Saturday 8 February at the Winter Gardens in Weston-super-Mare.
- Stand-up comedy is returning to a stage in Weston-super-Mare. Class Act Comedy returns with a selection of acts certain to have you chuckling away all night. From 7.30pm on Saturday 8 February, at Front Room Theatre in Dolphin Square.
