Help is at hand if you’re struggling to stick to health and wellbeing New Year’s resolutions.

The New Year can be an incentive to improve things, whether that’s our fitness, eating habits, drinking or smoking less, or connecting with others.

But once Christmas is over and our regular routines start again, it can be easy to forget about these good intentions.

If you need a gentle push in the right direction, there are lots of initiatives available in North Somerset to get you started.

Getting active doesn’t need to involve hours at the gym or buying lots of expensive equipment, though.

Start small and increase as you go on. Just walking outside for 10 minutes in the fresh air can help the blood circulate and refocus your mind.

Benefits of being active include:

  • good mental health
  • better sleep
  • maintaining a healthy weight
  • managing stress.

Our active directory has been updated for 2023 and it lists a wide range of physical activities for people or all ages and abilities.

View it online to find sports and activities across North Somerset.

We want to empower people to live healthier lives and the active directory is a great place to start, with something to suit everyone.

If you would like to meet others and get to know the local countryside, organised health walks also take place across the area.

It’s important to look after our mental wellbeing during winter too.

January might feel like a long month but the days are now getting brighter and spring will soon be here.

If you need more help with your mental health, our Five Ways to Wellbeing guide is a great place to start.

There is also a round-up of how to look after our wellbeing on our website.

Selected books to support mental health are also available under the Reading Well initiative from local libraries.

Books have been specially chosen by experts to help adults, children and young people manage and live with a variety of conditions, as well as information and support for coping with feelings and worries, daily life and getting through a tough time.
