Preparations begin next month for the arrival of a decommissioned North Sea offshore rig coming to North Somerset and being transformed into a world-class public art installation.

Planning permission was granted this week for SEE MONSTER and work to get ready for its arrival will begin on Tuesday 8 March.

The transformed structure, at the Tropicana in Weston-super-Mare, will blend entertainment, education and experimentation.

It will be open for eight weeks this summer and is one of 10 major creative projects commissioned by UNBOXED 2022: Creativity in the UK, a celebration of creativity designed to reach millions and bring people together.

On the large-scale structure, you’ll be able to go up a 35-metre platform - the highest viewing point along the south west coast.

Moving through the Monster, you’ll then pass behind a 10-metre waterfall into the underbelly of the beast.

Here you’ll find unexpected, unpredictable displays of the great British weather.

Take a brolly as you may encounter sudden rain showers or be engulfed by a collection of clouds.

Whatever the weather, SEE MONSTER will encourage interactive and playful moments.

A team of people will be on-hand to answer visitors’ questions, with a focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.

Entry will be free and local residents will be given priority access.

Information will be released in the spring so sign up for the newsletter to keep up-to-date.

You can also find out more by following the team on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
