Our library service has taken a big, bright step into the future with the launch of its brand‑new electric library outreach vehicle.

It’s designed to bring books, digital support and community activities closer to residents than ever before.

Unveiled last month, the new vehicle marks a major investment in making local library services more accessible, more sustainable and more flexible.

With over £309,000 from the Government’s Libraries Improvement Fund, plus an additional £40,000 from council match funding from section 106 funds, this project represents a real commitment to serving communities in fresh and creative ways.

The new electric outreach vehicle replaces the old diesel mobile library and brings several exciting improvements:

  • Lower carbon footprint – helping the council move toward environmental goals
  • Smaller and more flexible design – perfect for visiting rural areas, new housing developments and locations with tricky parking
  • On‑board Wi‑Fi and digital access – ideal for residents who need online support or want to boost their digital skills
  • Space for early years activities, cultural events and work‑skills sessions – turning the vehicle into a mini‑community hub wherever it goes.

More than books!

Of course, book lending remains at the heart of the service - but now there’s even more to enjoy. From children’s literacy activities to guidance sessions and opportunities to build new skills, the refreshed mobile library aims to meet residents where they are and offers something for everyone.

Arts Council England praised the project as “an exciting step forward in making a more accessible, sustainable and modern library service,” emphasising its role in bringing creativity and opportunity directly to the people who need it most.

Whether you love reading, need digital support, or just enjoy community activities, this innovative new outreach vehicle is set to make library services more welcoming, inclusive and fun across the whole area.
