Each February, the UK marks National Heart Month. Moving more is one of the best things you can do for your heart, helping keep it strong and healthy to reduce your risk of heart and circulatory diseases.

As well as lifting your mood and sharpening your focus, being more active will help strengthen your heart muscle, improve your circulation and lower blood pressure.

Moving more, at every age and ability, can have an impact on how we feel.

Every Move Matters is an NHS campaign which launched last year to highlight how moving just a little each day can build a stronger, healthier future.

Activities such as walking, cycling, dancing and gardening all help your heart pump blood more efficiently, meaning it doesn’t have to work as hard during everyday life.

A new activity for 2026?

If you’re looking to try out a new physical activity in 2026, why not check out the North Somerset Physical Activity Directory on the Better Health website for some ideas?

There’s also lots of other free information available online to help you move more.

The NHS Get Active website is a great place to start, with lots of tips and free tools.

Free exercise videos – including aerobics and yoga - are available on the NHS website, making it easy to work out without leaving home.

If you want to head outdoors, the Active 10 app tracks brisk walking and can help build a daily habit. And the Couch to 5k app has helped millions of people start and maintain a running habit.

The British Heart Foundation website also has lots of ideas to reduce your risk of heart and circulatory diseases, such as strength exercises you can do at home.
