Work begins on Monday (23 February) and will continue through to May.
The improvements, funded by central government and delivered by us, aim to make the transport hub safer, more accessible and more pleasant for passengers.
The scheme forms part of the region’s wider push towards sustainable travel, with funding specifically ring-fenced for bus infrastructure improvements.
Once completed, the upgraded interchange is expected to provide a safer, greener and more user-friendly transport hub for our community and a significant step forward for public transport in North Somerset.
Plans will modernise the interchange while supporting sustainable travel and local biodiversity. Key improvements include:
- Three new large bus shelters with additional space for wheelchairs and buggies, each topped with a living roof planted with native species
- Five real-time information screens featuring audio announcements to assist visually impaired passengers
- Upgraded public areas with improved lighting, new seating and a distinctive landmark feature on the central island
- Safer pedestrian crossings on Commercial Way and Queensway
- Enhanced cycle facilities, including extra stands, secure parking and a cycle maintenance station.
Together, the upgrades are designed to create a more welcoming gateway for thousands of passengers who use the interchange every week.
Temporary closure during construction
For safety reasons, the interchange will be fully closed throughout the works. Clearly marked pedestrian routes and bus diversions will remain in place to keep services running.
Alternative stops include:
- Coker Road (near Kwik Fit) — Service 7 to Locking Parklands and Service 9 to Weston-super-Mare
- Commercial Way (outside The Food Warehouse) — X1/X1s to Bristol, X5 to Portishead, X18 to Nailsea, A3 to Bristol Airport
- Park Way (near The Summerhouse) — X1/X1s, X5, X18, A3 and Service 6 towards Weston.
Service 1 will operate from the Becket Road stop on Queensway.
Staff will be on hand from Monday 23 February to help passengers locate their temporary stops, supported by posters and temporary markings.
