Marine Lake
A series of short temporary closures at Marine Lake will enable our seafront rangers to carry out regular maintenance on the two sluice gates.
These gates require frequent checks to make sure they are operating effectively.
During the closures, we plan to open the sluice gates, empty the lake, carry out a full visual inspection including checking the newly installed upgraded parts, and greasing and removing debris.
Water will then be allowed back into the lake during overtopping tides to allow the natural flushing of silt out of the lake.
This will help us assess the effectiveness of the sluice gates and levels of silt in the lake.
The short closures have been scheduled outside school holidays and will take place from:
- 8am on Monday 3 March to 9am on Wednesday 5 March
- 8am on Wednesday 26 March to 9am on Friday 28 March
- 8am on Monday 28 April to 9am on Thursday 1 May
- 8am on Tuesday 24 June to 9am on Thursday 26 June
- 8am on Monday 14 July to 9am on Wednesday 16 July.
No dredging will take place during these temporary closures and none is currently planned.
Future plans for the site include improving walkways, steps and ramps, and other enhancements including upgrading and re-opening the public toilets.
This work is due to be completed by the end of March 2026.
A planning application is due to be submitted soon.
We’re also continuing to work with the Weston Marine Lake Mudlarks, a group of volunteers who help with the management of the lake.
Keep an eye on the Weston Seafront Facebook page for updates and reminders before each closure.
Weston Woods
Urgent tree works for health and safety mean access will be restricted in Weston Woods over the next three weeks.
Several public rights of way in the woods are temporarily closed until Friday 7 March so we can fell diseased ash trees.
Work will take place from Monday to Friday only, not at weekends.
Ash Dieback is a fungal disease which can be fatal to trees.
There has been a rapid decline in the health of trees in Weston Woods so urgent action is needed to remove them to ensure the safety of users and prevent further damage to Worlebury Camp Hillfort, a scheduled monument.
Due to the nature of the work and machinery involved, no-one is allowed to pass in either direction between 8am and 5pm every day that the work is carried out.
During the closures, visitors must adhere to signage, barrier tape and fencing in place for health and safety reasons.
