Some essential Banwell bypass works will now start earlier than expected to help prevent further delays.

The decision was made at last Wednesday’s Executive meeting to bring forward a small number of important works to help keep up momentum on the site.

This work includes constructing a haul road, utilities diversions and more.

They were originally earmarked for stage two of the construction contract with Galliford Try but are now expected to take place this spring.

Bringing them forward demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the long-awaited scheme, and follows on from the environmental work we carried out last year.

Banwell bypass is a flagship scheme for North Somerset and one that stands to benefit local residents and the wider area.

It will also unlock land for new homes, which will help us meet government housing targets.

Before new homes are built, it’s important that necessary infrastructure is in place ready to support new and existing communities.

Galliford Try have also been out on the site completing enabling works to get the area ready for main construction.

We’re also working with Homes England to seek a funding increase for the scheme and an extension to funding availability into early 2027.

Our own funding contributions for the bypass are primarily from Section 106 and Community Infrastructure Levy contributions.

These can only be spent on improving infrastructure to support housing in our area.
