Construction of an eagerly awaited expansion of an academy in Weston-super-Mare is now complete.

Almost two years after pupils helped put the first spades in the ground and bury a time capsule at Winterstoke Hundred Academy, in Locking Parklands, the fantastic new school building is ready for pupils to begin lessons there in the new year.

The school has capacity for up to 900 pupils aged 11 to 18 in the eye-catching three-storey building.

It was designed as a net zero carbon building and has a much-sought after BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating for energy efficiency. Construction also included a 10 per cent net gain in biodiversity, which will protect and promote plants and wildlife.

Design features will keep the bright, modern classrooms warmer in winter and cooler in summer, while lots of natural light will help cut energy consumption all year-round.

Solar panels on the roof will generate electricity for the school as well as sending power to the national grid.

In addition to the building’s technical features, there is lots of bike storage and improved bus routes in the area will encourage more sustainable travel.

The number 7 bus service travels directly via Bowen Road in the Locking Parklands estate.

The school expansion was funded using Homes England’s Housing Infrastructure Fund, providing facilities our communities need to grow.
