We’ve written the final draft of our Local Plan 2039 and you have until 5pm on Monday 22 January to comment on it.
This plan identifies where development can and can’t take place in North Somerset, while guiding investment for new housing, jobs, transport and community facilities over the next 15 years.
It’s an over-arching plan for our area, which sits above local neighbourhood plans, and has been shaped by responses to three previous phases of consultation we’ve held between 2020 and 2022.
This version is a legal document which will be submitted for examination by an independent inspector.
We’ve based our plan on a requirement of 14,902 new homes in North Somerset between 2024 and 2039.
This figure reflects local needs and the constrained nature of North Somerset and is lower than the government’s standard method target calculation for the area.
We’re also seeking to maximise affordable housing wherever possible.
Without a Local Plan, we could end up with unplanned growth in the wrong places, with no supporting facilities.
The plan supports new job creation and economic growth by encouraging local employers to grow and our town centres regenerated.
It avoids development outside the towns in areas at risk of flooding and protects sensitive parts of the Green Belt from development.
Tackling the climate and nature emergencies and maximising the sustainability of new development are also key priorities, continuing our pledge to be net zero by 2030.
We want to use as much brownfield land as possible, support green networks and outdoor space, make sure new buildings are sustainable in both materials and energy use, provide opportunities for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport, and provide new homes close to jobs services and facilities.
