We’ve launched a consultation asking residents to have their say on the future of the Council Tax Reduction (CTR) Scheme provided in North Somerset.

A six-week consultation launched at the end of November asking for residents’ views on a proposal which could see the amount of council tax reduction offered to eligible residents reduce from Wednesday 1 April 2026

The CTR scheme helps households on low incomes with their council tax bills.

North Somerset’s population is 216,700 (census 2021) and CTR supports around 6,400 working age residents with council tax reduction.

With the current scheme, the council can cover up to a maximum of 75.5 per cent of a household’s council tax bill depending on eligibility. The consultation is asking for views on reducing this figure to 65.5 per cent.

Those not receiving the maximum CTR will also see a decrease in the amount of council tax reduction offered going forward from Wednesday 1 April if the proposal is approved.

Pension-age claimants (typically those aged over 66) will not be affected. Their support is set nationally by central government.

Like many councils across the country, we’re experiencing increasing demand for our services along with increasing costs and the council is facing the most challenging financial situation in its history. Every council service is being reviewed, and tough decisions are having to be made.

The consultation is open until 5pm on Tuesday 6 January
