Congestion-easing upgrades are planned for a busy junction in Weston-super-Mare so a drop-in information event is happening soon for you to find out more.

Proposed changes to the Queensway, New Bristol Road and B3440 area of Worle aim to allow the junctions to work more efficiently and effectively for all traffic, while creating the modern infrastructure needed to enhance current and future bus services.

An information event is taking place from 4pm to 7pm on Monday 1 September, at The Campus, in Highlands Lane, for local people to find out more.

If you can’t make this event, an information display will also be on show in the downstairs entrance to The Campus from Monday 18 August to Monday 1 September.

The work – planned to start this autumn into next year – includes:

  • converting two traffic light-controlled junctions between Queensway and Walford Avenue, and Bristol Road and the B3440, into two connected roundabouts. This will allow the junctions to function more fluidly, supporting a higher volume of traffic
  • small changes to two nearby roundabouts on New Bristol Road, to improve traffic flow. These are the Victory (at the entrance to the Sainsbury’s trading estate) and near the Summerhouse pub
  • updates to the B3440 slip-roads, which connect the A370 to M5 junction 21, to include new bus lanes and smart traffic signals using GPS to track buses’ locations to give them priority.

When this project starts, we’ll need everyone to do what they can to plan their journeys, check before they travel, and look at alternative transport options if possible during the works.

The work will be managed in conjunction with other infrastructure upgrades elsewhere on the road network, including work at junction 21 of the M5 by National Highways, replacing Winterstoke Road bridge on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, and building Banwell bypass.

This project is funded by the UK government through the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), as part of a wider approach to developing North Somerset’s strategic road network. The conditions of this funding mean it can’t be used to pay for other council services.
