We’ve been in discussions with the Odeon since the art deco building closed two months ago and on Wednesday (9 August), Merlin Cinemas bought the cinema and will rename it The Plaza.
We’ll support Merlin Cinemas in its work to maintain cinema operations at the building and are confident, with community support, there is a positive and sustainable future for this landmark site.
Merlin Cinemas is an independent cinema chain which specialises in operating character and predominantly coastal cinemas.
It already runs 17 cinemas across the country, mostly in the south west.
Merlin has assured us they will be valuing and promoting the much-loved Compton Organ and the role the building has at the heart of the town centre.
A short and long-term investment plan will be developed and it’s hoped the cinema will re-open in the near future.
