Could you take a step towards better health by walking every day in May – and inspire others to do the same?

Next month is National Walking Month, organised by the charity Living Streets, and we’d love to see as many people as possible take up the challenge of walking every day.

If you share your inspirational walking story or favourite route on social media, you’ll also be entered into a prize draw with the chance of winning a £10 Love To Shop voucher.

Use the hashtag #NSWalkThisMay and tagging Better Health North Somerset on Facebook or Twitter.

Walking is a great way to improve both physical and mental health.

It’s simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier, so ideal for all ages and fitness levels.

Even walking at home is a great way to increase your daily step count. Lots of free walk at home videos are available on YouTube, with instructors walking from just 10 minutes to over an hour, such as Get Fit With Rick, Sharona's Hill, Up to the BEat Fitness and Walk at Home

As well as the health benefits, walking can be a great way to explore your local area, whether that’s visiting a local nature spot or shops and businesses in towns and villages.

Local events are being organised across North Somerset throughout the month to provide inspiration, including organised group walks, walking sports and Nordic walking.

Information will be available in our local libraries as well as on our Better Health North Somerset website.

An extensive list of walking routes around the area can be found on the BetterHealth website.

This includes routes which are suitable for people who use wheelchairs or who have limited mobility.

Routes which have featured in North Somerset Life magazine can be found online.

You can also find details of organised walking groups, including our Health Walks, which offer 30 to 90 minute walks for those who are new to exercise.

Inspiration and tips can be found on the challenge Living Streets website and calendars to track your progress.

Throughout the month we’ll also be sharing information, tips and advice on Facebook and Twitter.
