Innovative new on-demand buses are now providing useful transport links for people across North Somerset.

The 30 bright green WESTlink minibuses are running as ‘demand responsive transport’, meaning buses go where they’re needed and without a set timetable or route.

The service launched at the beginning of April and in the first two weeks more than 6,500 people downloaded the app and almost 3,000 people used the service.

It’s been used to get people to work, shops, the cinema, hospital appointments and train stations for onward travel.

Communities who were without a local service now have the chance to get back on the bus.

Buses run Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 7pm (except public holidays).

An interactive map on the TravelWest website journey planner shows where in North Somerset the service operates.

There are several ways to book:

  • Download the free app by searching for ‘WESTlink’ on your usual app store. Once downloaded, you’ll need to create an account. Then just follow the instructions to book journeys.
  • Call 0117 457 8561, charged at local rates. You’ll speak to an operator who will ask your name and address, where you’d like to travel and what time you need to be there. You’ll get a confirmation phone call advising what time you need to be at your chosen stop.
  • Go online.

Pick-up and drop off locations will usually be an existing bus stop.

Tracking software on the app means you can see exactly where your bus is and when it will get to you.

A single fare is £2 for adults and £1 for children for any journey within a zone. These prices will stay until the end of June, when the government subsidy finishes.

All concessionary and older person’s bus passes are accepted.

You can pay by card through the app or call centre, or pay the driver with cash (no card reader on-board).

Guide dogs, guide dogs in training, learning dogs and assistance dogs can travel with their owners.
