Plans to help improve congestion and traffic flow on a main route in and out of Weston-super-Mare are moving forward.

A package of changes has been approved to help the junctions in the Queensway, New Bristol Road and B3440 area in Worle work much more efficiently and effectively.

Congestion is a well-known problem there and this scheme is an opportunity to make these junctions work better for the future, using targeted funding from government.

Now plans are approved, we’re looking to start work this autumn, with an anticipated finish date of spring 2026.

We’ll do everything we can to minimise disruption during the works.

A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) will be published about 12 weeks before any works are due to begin to formally advertise changes to the highway.

This TRO period is a legal process and the final opportunity for residents to submit any formal comments.

The plans include:

  • turning the two traffic light junctions between the Queensway and Walford Avenue, and Bristol Road and the B3440, into two, connected, roundabouts, help traffic to flow more freely with fewer delays
  • widening the west side of Victory roundabout (by the Sainsbury’s trading estate entrance) and adding better road signs and lines on the run up to the Summerhouse roundabout on New Bristol Road
  • creating the modern infrastructure needed to enhance our current and future bus services, including adding bus lanes on the B3440 slip-roads
  • doing lots of highway maintenance including resurfacing roads, sorting drainage, installing new traffic light technology, new crossings and better street lighting for everyone.

These improvements are only possible through the current ring-fenced funding we’ve received from the UK government under the Bus Service Improvement Plan

This funding means we can put infrastructure changes in place to benefit our growing population now and in future.

More people travelling by bus releases pressure on the road network and makes more effective use of squeezed road space.
