A planning application has been submitted this week for the first phase of work at historic Birnbeck Pier.

If approved, work is due to start later this year on the landside buildings, meaning they could reopen to the public next year.

It would also mean the next phase of the project could take place at this unique heritage site, including restoring the pier itself and re-establishing the RNLI lifeboat station on Birnbeck Island.

Our appointed architect practice, Haverstock, is seeking permission to:

  • restore Pier Master’s Cottage and reinstate the bell tower, extend the building to the north to create space for a café, which would be open to the public all-year-round. This café would provide a space for the public to watch the subsequent phases of repair and regeneration
  • create other visitor facilities, including toilets
  • make essential repairs to weatherproof the other landside buildings, known as Pier View, the old shell shop, and the South Toll House
  • stabilise buildings on the island, including The Pavilion, 1888 Boathouse and the Clocktower
  • provide essential services and infrastructure to the whole site – the landside buildings, the island and the pier itself – including work underground on water and sewage pumps, and installation of a new fit-for-purpose electricity substation.

See the documents, including detailed drawings, on our website, using reference is 24/P/0679/R3 for the planning application and 24/P/0680/RLA for the Listed Building application.

This element of restoration and renovation work is being funded from an allocation of £4.47m from the UK government’s Levelling Up Fund.

We purchased Birnbeck Pier and Island in July last year, thanks to £400,000 in funding from the RNLI.

The whole project to restore Birnbeck Pier and Island has been made possible thanks to funding from the RNLI, the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, National Heritage Memorial Fund, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England.
