Good listeners who could provide emotional support for people in distress or despair are needed to help lend an ear.

The Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset branch of Samaritans, based in the High Street near Grove Park, is looking for more people to help carry out its valuable work.

The team answers phone calls and emails from anyone finding it difficult to cope, and, when possible, offering face-to-face meetings.

Volunteers are given detailed training on how to support callers to the 24-hour helpline, with mentoring from experienced branch members.

Branch director Andy said: “Without our valued volunteers the charity would not exist.

“Samaritans training is second-to-none and all our volunteers receive ongoing support.

“It is very rewarding and there is no doubt that our phone lines are busier than ever with people who just need time and space to talk.”

All training is currently online. Email the branch on westonsupermare.recruitment@samaritans.org to find out more.
